Responsible Pet Ownership
Being a responsible pet owner is much more than just providing adequate water, food and shelter for your pet. Owning a pet is a lifetime commitment.
Here are some of things you should be prepared to do for your pet to have the happiest, healthiest life possible:
- Choose a pet that fits your lifestyle and affordability.
- Spay or neuter your pets (see the page Spay/Neuter for full details on the benefits)
- Ensure your pet is easily identified with an engraved name tag and/or microchip.
- Make sure your pet gets the proper amount of exercise.
- Provide veterinary care for your pet. Keep their vaccinations up to date and make sure they have annual checkups.
- Make sure your home is "pet" safe. Keep pesticides, medications, household cleaners and certain types of houseplants out of reach.
- Be prepared to take special care of your pet during their senior years.
